Nothing goes on the shelf straight from a trade-in. It is logged, wiped, opened where sensible, and run through a fixed set of checks that depend on what it is.
Displays get a dead pixel sweep and a uniformity check at three brightness levels. Speakers get a frequency sweep. Anything with a battery gets a capacity measurement rather than a guess.
The condition report you see on the listing is written at the bench, by the person doing the testing, and it records the faults as well as the passes. A scratch that will never affect use is still a scratch, and you should know about it before you buy.
If something fails a check and cannot be economically repaired, it is stripped for parts rather than listed. That is why our used stock is smaller than it could be.
